Registration is now open for the GTRI/ME/LMC co-hosted workshop, "Converting Materials Science Fiction in Materials Science Fact: Examples and Challenges."

This seminar will take place at Georgia Tech on Tuesday, September 19 from 9-1:30, EST. Led by science fiction authors Kathleen Ann Goonan and Wil McCarthy and science fiction critic and materials science engineer Karen Burnham, this workshop will explore the history of materials science in both fiction and fact, asking participants to consider how Georgia Tech might develop the next unrealized material or materials manufacturing technology that has already been predicted by science fiction.

Specific emphasis is placed on the sci-fi predictions of a specific material or materials manufacturing technology, such as synthetic spider silk (R. Heinlein, Misfit, 1939), rather than “general” predictions of technology, such as smartwatches (C. Gould, Dick Tracy, 1946). The event is designed to inspire research efforts that might lead to the creation of new materials & manufacturing methods previously predicted by sci-fi, but not yet realized as of today.
