Challenges in Aperiodic Media

Primary tabs

Conference honoring the 65th Birthday of Professor Jean Bellissard will be held during February 28-March 2, 2011 at the University of Lyon, France.

The theory of aperiodic media is a cornerstone of solid state physics and wonderfully rich in the variety of the mathematical techniques involved. Aperiodicity allows a better understanding of properties of such media, but still a large number of challenging questions remains open. We wish to unite experts from different communities to exhibit the state of the art and exchange ideas about aperiodic media. Lectures will include the following topics:

  • The structural analysis of quasiperiodic media by K-theoretic and geometric means with applications to gap labelling theorems, spectral analysis and diffraction.
  • The emergence of new tools of non-commutative geometry for various problems in solid state physics, such as the analysis on Cantor sets and fractals.
  • The non-commutative Bloch theory as a framework for the study of quasiperiodic and random operators.
  • Electronic transport in quantum mechanical models of quasiperiodic and disordered media, with particular focus on localization, Mott hopping and anomalous transport as well as topological robustness of conductivity properties.
