ADHD Screening Day

Primary tabs

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects children, adolescents, and adults. It is characterized by problems with attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. ADHD has been increasingly recognized as a challenging adult diagnosis, especially for students enrolled in college courses. Students with ADHD may have a significantly lower mean grade point average, be more likely to be on academic probation, and report significantly more academic problems. However, with the appropriate accommodations and treatment, college students will be more likely to succeed in their course assignments, including tests and written assignments.

Facts about ADHD

  • Nearly 4.5% of adults in the United States have been diagnosed with ADHD.
  • People with ADHD have more difficulties in school, at work, and in social relationships than those without the disorder.
  • The exact cause of ADHD is unknown, 76% of ADHD is thought to run in families.
  • Only 25% of adults with ADHD were diagnosed in childhood.
  • Although some ADHD symptoms are evident since early childhood, some individuals may not experience significant problems until later in life. Some very bright and talented individuals, for example, are able to compensate for their ADHD symptoms and do not experience significant problems until college, or in pursuit of their career.
