(August 29, 2006)—Computing Science and Systems (CSS) division Professor Sy Goodman was recently appointed chairperson of the National Research Council Committee on Improving Cyber Security Research in the United States. The committee was charged with developing a coherent strategy for cyber Security research for the 21st Century.

Although problems associated with keeping computers and networks secure today are arguably worse than they were 20 years ago, cyber security is unfortunately one of the few areas of information technology that has not advanced very far. However, Goodman and the committee will lay out a research agenda for helping to close this gap.

The National Research Council is the operating arm of the National Academies, which also includes the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine. The National Academies operate under a Congressional charter to provide the federal government with advice about matters of science and technology as they relate to public policy. In their quest to provide such advice, the Academies draw on some of the best talent in the country. Goodman’s appointment as committee chair was made on August 10, 2006 by Ralph Cicerone, President of the National Academy of Sciences and Chair of the National Research Council.
