Summary

Abstract: 

Smallpox was a scourge of humans for thousands of years, killing more humans than any other infectious disease in history.  However, poxviruses are diverse and represent a large number of viral species capable of infecting humans, as well as other animals.  Emerging zoonotic diseases remain a contemporary public health threat to human and animal populations.  Examples of poxvirus emerging threats, research and applications to public health will be described.
