"Cardiovascular Surgical Planning Tools"

ABSTRACT

The advent of highly available medical imaging has created diverse new opportunities in cardiovascular surgical planning.  Physical and virtual representations of pre- and post-surgical anatomy and physiology are now playing key roles in clinical preparation and decision-making.  As surgical planning tools become more prevalent in clinical practice, their roles are transcending the historical convention of general, qualitative guidance and moving increasingly toward personalized, quantitative optimization.  This transition requires tools that are both more capable and also more thoroughly validated than ever before.  In this talk, new cardiovascular surgical planning paradigms will be presented that leverage the latest in physical and virtual modeling technologies.  Specifically, the talk will discuss finite element modeling of endovascular interventions, 3D printing-based surgical planning for congenital heart defect repair, and virtual implantation for optimizing mechanical cardiac support and heart transplant.  The critical underlying roles of medical imaging and computer vision will also be explored.
