Title: Improving the Performance of Distribution Supply Chains By Using Scheduled Synchronized Ordering with Information Sharing

Speaker: Professor Srinagesh Gavirneni, Cornell University

Abstract: We study a supply chain with one supplier and many retailers that face exogenous end-customer demands. In contrast to the retailers' newsvendor type ordering behavior, we propose a scheduled Synchronized Ordering Policy (SOP), under which all the retailers order freely in the same and only one period of an ordering cycle, and receive fixed shipments in other periods. We identify mathematical conditions under which SOP outperforms the newsvendor type ordering and corroborate them with numerical studies. We also compare SOP to Balanced Ordering Policy (BOP), under which the retailers take turns to order freely in one period of the cycle, and receive fixed shipments in other periods.
