China's Pearl River Delta: A Mega City-region in Transition
Thanks to the heavy foreign direct investment, the Pearl River Delta, an agricultural region 30 years ago, has transformed itself to be a world manufacture base dramatically. Now it is one of the major economic power houses of China and a rapid growing mega-city region in the world. The changes of internal and external environment in recent year, however, have driven this region to its "turning point". After three years preparation and discussion, new strategies have been introduced by the PRD Regional Spatial Plan. The Pearl River Delta is on the way to transform itself again.

Xiangming Ma, the chief planner of Guangdong Urban Planning and Design Institute, is an influential and well known city planner actively practicing in Pearl River Delta, a rapid growing mega-city region of China. He has been involved in most of the key planning projects in this region. One of recent project of those is a jointed research project sponsored by Hong Kong SAR and Guangdong Provincial Government, the project focus on the co-ordination between Hong Kong and Guangdong on sustainable development in the Pearl River Delta region.
