Aerospace Engineering graduate student Bosung Kim has been awarded a 2nd Place prize in the 9th annual Joseph A. Hartman Student Paper Competition for his paper, "Runway Assignment by Minimizing Emissions in Terminal Airspace", co-authored with Prof. John-Paul Clarke and Dr. Leihong Li, a Research Engineer -- both in the AE School. The 2nd Place prize comes with $500, along with an invitation to the 20th PARTNER Advisory Board Meeting on Feb 27-28, 2013, and the 10-year Review Symposium on March 1, 2013, at the Westin South Coast Plaza, Cost Mesa, CA -- travel expenses to be paid by PARTNER (Partnership for Air Transportation Noise and Emissions Reduction).

The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students located anywhere in the world. Papers must relate to aircraft noise and/or emissions reduction. Of particular interest are papers describing research in:

• socio-economic effects of noise and emissions
• operational measures for noise and emissions reduction
• compatable land use management
• gaseous and particulate matter emissions and mitigation
• climate and air quality effects of aviation emissions
• alternative fuels
• aviation environmental policy
• aircraft and engine design for environment

The competition seeks to capture the best ideas concerning technical solutions, economic analysis, methodologies, and processes that work towards reducing aviation noise and emissions exposure through source reduction technologies, alternative fuels, operating procedures, compatible land use management, and policy implementation
