TEAM Buzz Kicks Off Saturday

Primary tabs

TEAM Buzz takes to the streets of Atlanta to kick off Georgia Tech's 12th eponymously named annual community service day, from 8 a.m. to noon this Saturday, Oct. 10.

Not just a show of Yellow Jacket spirit, the TEAM moniker is a representation of the organization's and the event's goals. An acronym for "Tech Enhancing Atlanta Metropolitan," TEAM Buzz has strived since 1997 "to promote a sense of community and philanthropic spirit among the various groups and organizations at Georgia Tech through service to the Atlanta community," according to the organization's Web site.

Led by a team of 16 dedicated students as well as the faculty advisor, President's Scholarship Program Associate Director Billie Pendleton-Parker, this year's volunteers will be welcomed at the Campanile by President Bud Peterson before they disperse to locations around the city.

Nearly 40 service projects ensure that the students, faculty and staff members involved can spend a few hours working on a project they enjoy, all while serving the metro Atlanta area community. Options include walking dogs, cleaning up the environment, helping others reduce carbon emissions and interacting with Atlanta's youth. Currently more than 1,600 members of the Georgia Tech community have signed up to help out.

As in previous years, freebies are a treat for all those involved. Free breakfast, T-shirts and an afternoon Homecoming carnival, replete with pizza, cotton candy, popcorn, games and booths, await this year's volunteers. Other more subtle perks are also earned for time spent in service to others, as opportunities for personal growth and a path for unity within the Georgia Tech community may prove to be the most satisfying rewards.

A complete project list and volunteer sign-up form is available at the event Web site. Interested volunteers should sign up prior to Oct. 10.
