The Aerospace Corporation has provided independent technical and scientific research, development, and advisory services to national security space programs since 1960. We operate a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) for the United States Air Force and the National Reconnaissance Office and support all national security space programs. We also apply more than 50 years of experience with space systems to projects for civil agencies like NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, commercial companies, universities, and international organizations in the national interest. From our inception, our highly skilled technical staff has focused on ensuring the success of every mission and developing the most effective and economic space-related hardware and software in the world. Our greatest asset is the technical expertise of our people. Our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities are staffed by some of the leading scientists in the world.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Aerospace has offices in the Washington DC metro area and Los Angeles, Ca. The staff comprises a diverse set of highly respected engineers and scientists who provide computer science/computer engineering support to space systems. The computer sciences are essential contributors to the Aerospace mission as computing systems are at the very heart of space systems design and implementation.

We are looking for a Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering graduate and undergraduate student to perform the following duties:

  • Participate in a wide range of Prototyping and Technology Laboratory activities to include:
    • (a) Develop software prototypes in a wide variety of mission areas to include command and control, mission planning & scheduling, and others;
    • (b) integrate hardware and software to support signal processing experiments; and
    • (c) research emerging IT technologies including cloud computing, continuous integration (e.g. Buildbot), software defined networks, model-based engineering, programming languages, data analytics and metadata modeling.
    • Provide focused support on technical areas that include cloud (e.g. - Amazon Web Services, OpenStack), virtualization (e.g. - Xen Hypervisor), messaging (RabbitMQ), architecture (especially SOAs), configuration/deployment management (e.g. - Puppet, Chef), and data engineering, among others.
    • Maintain technical excellence through participation in technology studies, system/software analyses, independent assessments, and research efforts: e.g. analysis of system/software architectures and frameworks; comparison of engineering tools and environments; and experimentation with new techniques and methods.
    • Contribute to Team-based demonstrations of in-house developed prototypes/systems.
    • Contribute to technical reports and other presentations to disseminate findings, guidance and technical information to as wide an audience as possible.
    • Support coordinated analysis of system requirements, evaluation of architectures and designs, assessments of systems development and engineering processes, and monitoring of software and systems acquisitions.

 

Qualifications

The following qualifications are required:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain TS/SCI clearance
  • BS, MS, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or other engineering/analytical degree.
  • Overall GPA minimum of 3.0
  • Proficient in one or more programming languages (e.g. C/C++, C#, Java, Python). Must be able to quickly learn new programming languages (e.g. Ruby on Rails).
  • Experience and expertise in team-based software development and familiar with all phases of software development.
  • A strong technical background and clearly demonstrated experience with current technologies: examples include but are not limited to cloud, virtualization, messaging, SOA, data engineering, and algorithm development.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be highly motivated. Must be able to work well collaboratively or independently, as each task requires. Must be able to adapt to a customer's evolving needs.
  • Ability to analyze existing and create new software designs/architectures.
