Shabbir Ahmed Appointed Dean’s Professor and Stewart Fellow

ISyE Professor Shabbir Ahmed has recently been honored with two prestigious appointments.  Dean Gary May and the College of Engineering have appointed Ahmed to the position of Dean’s Professor. Ahmed has also been appointed with a three year term as a Stewart Faculty Fellow by the Stewart School of Industrial & Systems Engineering.  

The designation of Dean's Professor is rare and is intended to honor young, up and coming full professors who are rising stars. Ahmed was selected for his outstanding scholarship, dedication to education, and excellence in service at Institutional and national/international levels. 

The Stewart Faculty Fellow appointment also recognizes Ahmed’s outstanding accomplishments and future potential for leadership of the field.  This term position will provide him with resources to advance his research program and expand the reach of its important impact.

Ahmed’s research interests are in optimization, specifically stochastic and integer programming. Past honors include the National Science Foundation CAREER award, two IBM Faculty Awards, the Coca-Cola Junior Professorship from ISyE, and the INFORMS Dantzig Dissertation award.

He has served as the chair of the Community of Stochastic Programming (2007-2010), and as a Stochastic Programming vice-chair of the INFORMS Optimization Society (2006-2008). He serves as associate editor of a number of journals including Mathematical Programming and Operations Research. Ahmed received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2000.
