Enroll in Tech Prep and Get a Head Start in Calculus

Primary tabs

The Tech Prep Program is a partnership between Georgia Tech's Center for Academic Success, School of Mathematics, and the Department of Residential Life’s Freshman Experience Program. This late summer program is designed to give first-time Tech students an added advantage in successfully completing their calculus courses. Tech Prep is a non-credit, intensive, residential program that will review fundamental calculus concepts as well as introduce strategies for academic success in other first-year courses. Tech Prep is designed to be an active, social, and relaxed environment with the overall goal of giving new students a head start on their success at Tech.

There are many benefits to enrolling in Tech Prep:

  • Provides students with more than 40 instructional hours on fundamental calculus concepts that are critical to success in MATH 1501 and 1502 (Calculus I and II) or MATH 1712 (Survey of Calculus). The concepts covered are based on faculty observation of problems commonly experienced by students in Tech calculus courses, even though they may have performed well in AP Calculus.
  • Introduces students to features of an advanced college learning environment, including the lecture format, classroom technology, faculty expectations, college level exams, and faculty evaluation of student performance in the college classroom.
  • Helps students develop relationships with peer mentors who are successful Georgia Tech students. Through Peer Led Undergraduate Study (PLUS) sessions, participants will gain understanding of good study techniques and participate in collaborative learning activities designed to enhance learning and improve student performance. PLUS sessions will combine "what to study" with "how to study" in college.
  • Provides Academic Success workshops and programs that will address common topics relevant to first- year student success. These workshops will be highly interactive and will include a trip to the Georgia Tech Leadership Challenge Course to develop teamwork and leadership skills.

Tech Prep will take place August 3-13, with a move-in date of August 3. Enrollment is limited. Students will move into their fall freshman housing assignment at the close of the program. To be eligible, participants must be incoming Georgia Tech first-year students. Please note that Tech Prep is a non-credit bearing program. Some financial aid and/or scholarship awards may not be used towards the cost of the program.
