Uwaifo Oyelere Presents Research in Beijing, China

Primary tabs

Based on her research on education in Africa, Dr. Ruth Uwaifo Oyelere was invited by Prof. Justin Lin (former Chief Economist of the World Bank) to present her handbook chapter  “School Enrollment, Attainment, and Returns to Education in Africa” at a  meeting in Beijing China hosted by Peking University from the December 8-10, 2013.  One significant finding highlighted by Dr. Oyelere in her talk is the divergence in the last four decades in female and male secondary gross enrollment rates for Sub Saharan Africa. This growing gender gap in secondary enrollment is in contrast to trends in other developing regions where secondary gross enrollment rates are converging or the gender gap has disappeared.  Dr. Oyelere’s chapter and chapters by economists including Nobel Laureate Professor Roger Myerson and other experts will be published in Oxford University Press’ first Handbook of Africa and Economics, forthcoming in 2014. The Handbook is edited by Prof. Justin Lin and Dr. Celestin Monga  (World Bank).
