Javier Irizarry, assistant professor in the School of Building Construction, has been selected to participate in the GoSTEM Faculty Fellowship Program at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  As a GoSTEM Faculty Fellow, Irizarry will be involved in special events and activities to increase awareness of Hispanic culture at Georgia Tech and to promote Georgia Tech’s role in supporting the educational opportunities of minority students in K-12 outreach programs.  Irizarry will draw from his experiences with other organizations such as the ACE Mentor Program and the Future Cities Competition that work to increase participation of under-represented minorities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathmatics) fields.

GoSTEM is a collaboration between Georgia Tech and the Gwinnett County Public School District to enhance the educational experience of Latino students in Georgia and strengthen the pipeline of these students into post-secondary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education.  The project's long-term goal is to create a research-supported model for how technical universities, school systems, and philanthropic foundations can partner to promote academic achievement in STEM fields among Hispanic K-12 students.  The program is funded by The Goizueta Foundation.
