Application deadline for Georgia State Urban Accelerated Certification and Master's program

Primary tabs

The Georgia State University’s Urban Accelerated Certification and Master’s (UACM) program is an exciting two-year alternative certification program at the Master's degree level for individuals who have an undergraduate degree or higher in an area other than education and are interested in teaching in urban elementary schools. Candidates in our program enroll in six consecutive semesters (Year 1: summer, fall, spring and Year 2: summer, fall, spring) in a lock-step sequence leading to PreK-5th certification, an ESOL endorsement and a Master’s degree. Candidates spend the first year as full-time non-paid teacher candidates taking courses and completing field experiences in high-poverty schools in the metro Atlanta area. At the end of the first year, candidates that have successfully met all requirements are recommended to the state for certification in Early Childhood Education (Pre-K through 5th grade) with an English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Endorsement. During the second year of the program, candidates obtain full-time paid teaching positions in high-poverty urban elementary schools in the Atlanta metro area and continue to be supported through seminars and mentorship experiences leading to a Master's Degree in Education.

Deadline to apply: February 15, 2014.

 Funding available

Through a Transition to Teaching Grant provided by the Department of Education, a one-time stipend of $7500 for teacher certification is awarded to all UACM students entering the program, with a signed, three-year service agreement to teach in a high-needs school.

Additionally, the Teach Grants are available during years that early childhood education is deemed a critical shortage field.  Please consult www.gsfc.org  for further information.
