Atlanta. "Hotlanta." Whatever you call this historic Southern city, it's the epicenter of one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States. And for planners, it's a city with stories to tell and lessons to share.

Atlanta was founded in 1837 as the end of the Western & Atlantic railroad line. Today it remains a transportation hub, home of the world's busiest airport. The city is a banking center and home to 13 Fortune 500 companies.

In the past decade, the population of metro Atlanta has jumped by nearly 40 percent to 4.1 million people. While such rapid growth has posed challenges, it also has presented opportunities: the transformation of the BeltLine, the inauguration of Atlanta's new streetcar, the revitalization of Olympic venues, and the cultivation of sustainable communities.

Twice so far in this decade, APA has honored Atlanta with Great Neighborhoods awards. In 2011 suburban Ansley Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, was recognized for its walkable neighborhoods and lush green spaces.
