New 'Modern Languages Introductory Seminar in Cross-Cultural Understanding' for Georgia Tech Students

Primary tabs

The School of Modern Languages will launch a new seminar for Modern Language students titled, "Modern Languages Introductory Seminar in Cross-Cultural Understanding" beginning Fall 2013.

The goal of the seminar is to offer students an in-depth cross-cultural understanding, by exploring major concepts of human conditions. One selected concept (for example, fear, marginalization, or friendship) is examined through a close reading of the major literary works representing different languages and cultural traditions.

The topic for the first seminar this Fall, is "Think Globally, Act Locally" and the concept of marginalization and nonconformity is examined through a close reading of the major literary works representing different languages and cultural traditions.

The seminar will feature texts originating from seven languages (Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish) and nine world regions (China, France, Francophone Africa, Germany, the Hispanic Caribbean, Japan, Latin America, Russia, and the United States). The seminar will be team-taught by eight stellar faculty from the School of Modern Languages.  Each faculty member will select assigned text, give guest lectures and lead discussions on the text, assign written essays and participate in the collective assessment of students’ final course projects. Dr Kelly Comfort in the School of Modern Languages will lead this seminar.

In keeping with GT Mission and Strategic Plan, The Modern Languages Introductory Seminar in Cross-Cultural Understanding, will contribute to the task of preparing virtuous global citizens and world leaders in pursuing globally significant challenges that will help improve the human condition.
