The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) in collaboration with the U.S. Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) will host an international conference May 7 on the current status and trends of protocols and standards for the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) solutions.

The conference will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 118 of the Technology Square Research Building on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta. This is the third such event under the auspices of the M2M Standardization Task Force, a forum from the Global Standards Collaboration of the United Nations' International Telecommunication Union.

IoT – using the Internet to monitor, track, control, and interconnect everyday objects – is  receiving widespread attention worldwide, moving from technical discussions among scientists and experts to mainstream talk and business strategy. The Economist along with other publications recently dubbed 2013 as "the year of the Internet-of-Things."

The conference will explore a broad array of M2M and IoT standardization paths, including those within the open source community. Speakers include Marco Carugi and Jun Seob Lee of the International Telecommunication Union,  Joachim Koss of OneM2M, William Webb of Weightless SIG, Steve Liang of Open Geospatial Consortium, Michael Koster of the Open Source Internet-of-Things Silicon Valley, Mike Milinkovich of Eclipse, Laurent Liscia of the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), Xavier Vilajosana of the OpenWSN project at the University of California-Berkeley and Jeffrey O. Smith of Numerex, the conference's sponsor.
