Parents Fund Behind the Scenes: Selecting Which Student Life Programs to Fund

Primary tabs

Each year, the Parents Fund for Student Life & Leadership supports student life programs that directly enhance your student’s overall experience at Georgia Tech.  Many worthwhile student-led, student-created programs compete for the same funding, so who decides which programs should receive support from the Parents Fund?  The Student Life Allocations Board is charged with this responsibility.  Comprised of four students jointly nominated by the Undergraduate and Graduate Student Body Presidents of the Student Government Association and advised by the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Dean of Students, the Board reviews student-created proposals submitted by student organizations and funds those proposals which promote interaction on campus, provide entertainment, and encourage cultural awareness, volunteerism, and leadership development.

For this fiscal year, the Board received 36 proposals, with requests totaling more than double the available funding of $125,000.  After careful review of the proposals, the Board approved the 19 that best matched the criteria set forth by the Parents Fund.  Some of the programs receiving funding this year include Women’s Awareness Month, Welcome Home Month, Campus Safety Campaign, Hispanic Heritage Month, and the Woodruff Arts Center Ridership program, among others.

Describing the importance of the support provided by the Parents Fund, Undergraduate Student Body President and Board member Eran Mordel said, “The impact on campus is far-reaching.  We chose programs which are open to the entire community and offer a wide range of activities to appeal to every student.”  Mordel discussed the need for such programming, and said in order to balance the rigorous curriculum at Tech, “having outlets through these wide-scale events is phenomenal for students.”

But right now, the demand for funding far outweighs the supply. By supporting the Parents Fund for Student Life & Leadership, you can help ensure that more funding is available to support a variety of programs that directly benefit your student.  If you haven’t already, we encourage you to support these student-led programs by contributing to the Parents Fund for Student Life & Leadership.  Click here to make your gift to the Parents Fund today.
