Nanotube Assemblages for Structures Workshop

Primary tabs

The Manufacturing Research Center held the facilitated workshop, "AFOSR/AFRL/NASA Joint Workshop on Nanotube Assemblages for Structures" at the Technology Square Research Building (TSRB) at Georgia Tech. The challenges and barriers of translating the potential of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to macroscale aerospace structures were discussed and debated.

There were 36 attendees from industry, government, and education. The format of the workshop included focused panel discussions with specific guiding questions to address the tall poles in making structural nanomaterials a reality. The workshop focused on the subset of CNT materials techology for structural applications. Sessions included:

  • Reality check – what are the needs and prospective application challenges?
  • Challenges and barriers to going from nanoscale to microscale assemblages – tubes to sheets, yarns, fibers
  • Challenges and barriers to going from microscale to macroscale structures
  • Leveraging real-time concept maps to stimulate discussion of technology gaps and problems with advancing CNTs from nanoscale to macroscale applications.
