Treating Students Equally in Class While Also Honoring Their Diversity

Instructors are increasingly asked to teach large classes and create active, learner centered environments.  In the process, instructional opportunities that ensure both equity and diversity in large classes can be overlooked. This interactive workshop will explore some of the causes of unintentional inequity in large classes and their consequences on student learning. Through case study, discussion, and engaging activities,  participants will discuss practical teaching strategies that promote equity and diversity for all students and improve student learning as well.

 At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to: (1) describe the opportunities in teaching large classes to promote equity and diversity; (2) identify connections between the challenges of teaching large classes and the challenges of equity in the classroom; (3) explain examples of unintentional classroom inequity from student-written case studies; and (4) generate practical teaching strategies to create equitable classrooms that promote student learning.
