Strategies for Mentoring Your Grad Students and TAs

9 to 10:30 a.m.

Mentoring graduate students is an important aspect of each faculty member’s role at Georgia Tech. Join your colleagues for a discussion of the qualities and benefits of good mentoring, the importance of clarifying mutual expectations, and strategies for building and maintaining good relationships with graduate students and TAs.

Facilitated by:

Lydia Soleil, assistant director, TA programs and graduate student development, CETL

Mathematica and iPads: Innovative Uses of Technology for Teaching and Learning

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

If you’re interested in exploring Mathematica and/or iPads as instructional tools, this workshop is for you! The session will begin with two examples from faculty. Jim Craig will highlight how he uses “Mathematica” for courses in structural mechanics (COE3001 and AE3125).  Next, Damon Williams will present “The Top 5 iPad Apps to Use for Instruction.”

Participants will then join discussion groups on either Mathematica or iPads and serve as resources to each other. How are faculty currently using this tool for instruction? What possibilities do you see for using this tool in your instruction in the future? (If you plan to be part of the iPad group, please bring your iPad to the session so that you can show others how you use it.)

The workshop will conclude with highlights from each group and an invitation to indicate whether (and if so, how) you would like to connect with peers on this topic in the future.

Facilitated by:

Jim Craig, professor, Aerospace Engineering

Damon Williams, faculty fellow, Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning
