"Dual Factor Delivery for Enhanced Survival and Function of a Tissue Engineered Pancreatic Substitute (TEPS) for Diabetes"

A major obstacle in developing a TEPS is loss of function due to immune rejection (IR) and hypoxia. IR is reduced by therapeutic cell encapsulation in alginate microcapsules, but hypoxic conditions remain, causing a decline in viability and cell function. Harnessing natural pancreatic paracrine signaling, we delivered GLP-1 and SDF-1 to encapsulated β cells, which reduced apoptosis and improved insulin secretion under hypoxic conditions.

"East African Cichlids: A Natural Model for Dental Regeneration"

While promising therapeutics are being developed in regenerative dentistry, little is known about how we replace our teeth because of limitations in the dentitions of model organisms. We exploit the continuously replaced teeth of the Lake Malawi cichlid to uncover cells responsible for tooth regeneration. This study improves our understanding of the natural renewal of organs and may contribute key insights for regenerative bioengineering.
