Mercury Help: Basic Overview

Primary tabs

Mercury is Georgia Tech’s internal system for Create Once, Publish Everywhere (COPE) content management. Mercury allows users to upload content directly in hg.gatech.edu

and publish the content on multiple Georgia Tech sites once using feeds. The system was designed to be compatible with Drupal sites; there is currently no version for WordPress sites.

You may notice that in many places, the term “Hg” is used instead of “Mercury.” This is because Hg is the chemical symbol for the element mercury. Since it has fewer keystrokes, the web team sometimes uses the shortened form instead.

The system has two components: Mercury, which is a central hub where content is created and categorized, and Mercury Reader, which is an importer block on your site that automatically pulls in content relevant to your audience.

Content can be pulled through the system, but not pushed. For example, if the Research team wanted to include content from the College of Computing, they could add CoC as a criterium for their feed. CoC content would then get pulled directly into the Research site as soon as it is published. However, CoC cannot decide to push their content onto Research’s site. This is to ensure that admins always have full control of the content on their sites: nobody can add something to your site unless you (or site admins) add it.

You can request help with Mercury through the gold buttons on the Mercury Help page.
