Joanna Aizenberg received her B.S and M.S from Moscow State University and her Ph.D. from the Weizmann Institute of Science (Department of Structural Biology. She then went to Harvard University where she did postdoctoral research with George Whitesides on micro- and nanofabrication, and on patterned surfaces.

In 1998 Aizenberg joined Bell Labs as a member of the Technical Staff where she has made contributions on several field including developing new biomimetic approaches for the synthesis of ordered mineral films with highly controlled shapes and discovering unique optical systems formed by organisms (microlenses and optical fibers) that outshine technological analogs, and characterized the associated organic molecules

Aizenberg has served on numerous advisory committees including for the NSF and the National Academies She is a member Board of Directors for MRS, and is currently member of the Board of Reviewing Editor for Science Magazine, and has Chaired Gordon Conferences. Aizenberg has presented numerous plenary and named lectures including the Woodward Lecture at Harvard and the Pederson Award lecture at Dupont.
