DNA as a Catalyst for Bioorganic Chemistry

The Silverman laboratory studies fundamental and applied aspects of the nucleic acids, DNA and RNA. This presentation focuses on the development and application of DNA as a catalyst (deoxyribozyme). Our initial studies of DNA catalysts have focused on issues of chemical selectivity, especially regioselectivity and site-selectivity during ligation of two RNA substrates. More recently, our efforts are expanding to study deoxyribozymes that catalyze reactions of non-oligonucleotide substrates, including substrates that are small-molecule compounds and peptides, with an eye towards applications in vitro and in vivo.
