ROMPing with ADAMs and cyclobutenes: From fertilization to antibacterials

Regio-and stereochemical control of polymer synthesis is an important focus of chemical biology and materials research. During the course of mechanistic investigation with polymers that display the essential binding motif of fertilinβ in multivalent fashion to probe sperm-egg interactions in fertilization, we sought polymers with more precise regio-and stereochemical control for distance measurements and optimal presentation of functionality. New cyclobutene monomers for polymerization have been developed to circumvent these problems. Their synthesis and applications as microbicides will be discussed.
