Understanding the Learning Process as the Gateway to Better Teaching

Learning is the litmus test of good teaching. Therefore, one of the most important investments instructors can make to maximize the effectiveness of their teaching is to understand the learning process. Yet some may find a gap between educational resources that focus on learning and those that provide practical classroom strategies. This very interactive workshop draws upon learning research from the cognitive, motivational, and developmental perspectives to highlight ideas from the presenter's new book, How Learning Works: Seven Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching. Join this discussion about student learning and teaching approaches that support it.

Dr. Michele DiPietro is the Executive Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Kennesaw State University. He received his Ph.D. in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University in 2001. His scholarly work includes learning sciences, academic integrity, diversity and inclusivity in the classroom, statistics education, student evaluations of teaching, faculty development, and teaching in times of tragedies. His new book, How learning works: Seven research-based principles for smart teaching, co-authored with former Eberly Center colleagues at Carnegie Mellon, distills the research on learning and provides pedagogical strategies for educators. His teaching has been featured on The Chronicle of Higher Education and in other publications.
