Welcome Katundu Imasiku to ISyE, New Postdoctoral Fellow

Introducing Dr. Katundu Imasiku, an expert in renewable energy and engineering, joining the ISyE team at Georgia Tech. With a Ph.D. in Renewable Energy and a wealth of experience in renewable energy and climate science, Imasiku brings invaluable insights to the forefront of net zero freight systems research at Georgia Tech.
Q: Where did you study, or what do you specialize in?
A: I hold several certifications in Micro-Grid and Smart Grids, Solar Systems, Arc GIS, OnSSET, Power Factory and Risk Management.
With a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical / Electronics, from the Copperbelt University in Zambia, 2001. Additionally, he’s obtained a master's degree in business administration at Business School Netherlands, in the Netherlands, 2017; followed by a Ph.D. in Renewable Energy, University of Rwanda, 2020.
Q: What is your previous experience in the field?
A: Team Lead – Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen at SASSCAL (Southern African Science Service Center for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management)
Before coming to GT, Katundu worked for the SASSCAL, Namibia (2020 – 2023); Postdoctoral Fellow – University of Cape Town, 2022.
Other key positions he’s held are Project Engineer, Protection and Design Engineer, Network Development Planner, Substation Design Engineer in South Africa (2004-2008), Projects Manager and Telecommunications Engineer, Zambia (2009 – 2012).

Q: Tell us about the current position you’re in, & interest areas you’ll be focusing on:
A: Postdoctoral Fellow – Net Zero Freight System Program with focus on reducing freight system greenhouse gas emissions, electric vehicles and non-carbon fuels and clean fuels.
Q: What sparked your interest in engineering (and your research), and how did you decide to pursue it as a career?
A: I wanted to be part of the Net Zero Freight Systems Program and contribute to the development of sustainable pathways for a resilient freight system with reduced greenhouse gas emissions and lower environmental impacts and mitigate climate change for greater societal benefits in USA and the World at large.
Q: Outside of work, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy that might influence or complement your approach to life?
A: I like fitness workouts, hiking, playing ping pong, cooking and reading books.
Q: Can you recount a heartwarming moment that captures the essence of your mentor-mentee relationship within the Georgia Tech community?
A: So far, I appreciate the warm welcome and support received by all staff members in all GT departments, especially from the HR department which has been supporting me to settle in Atlanta and in my job.
