CEISMC hosts K-12 Summit to grow K-12 STEM visibility across campus

Primary tabs

The Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) will be hosting the Georgia Tech K-12 Summit on October 12 to provide opportunities for Georgia Tech faculty, staff, and students, who are involved or interested in K-12 outreach, to learn and share their experiences and approaches and connect with the broader campus community.

“The K-12 STEM Outreach Group has grown and evolved over the years. Expanding beyond our quarterly meetings, we are also engaging more groups across campus through collaborations, lunch and learns, and events like this one. Hosting the Summit, along with publishing an annual report, illustrates how well-aligned K-12 efforts are with the Institute's strategic plan by expanding access and amplifying impact,” said Heidi Turcotte, CEISMC program director for campus & community coordination.

The one-day Summit's goal is to raise awareness of K-12 activities and outreach happening across the Georgia Tech campus. It is also an excellent opportunity to network and learn more about the various programs that take place on campus.

The first Georgia Tech K-12 Summit was held in 2017 in which the Office of the Provost hosted and CEISMC served as a partner. About 100 faculty, staff, and administrators attended. From this inaugural event, the CEISMC team has established and now manages the Campus K-12 Portal, created the Georgia Tech K-12 STEM Connection Newsletter, hosted the annual Georgia Tech STEAM Leadership Conference, and supported the K-12 STEM Outreach Group.

A second Summit was held in spring 2023 with 67 participants from 30 different departments across campus. Fifteen “Lightning Talks” took place in which campus representatives shared their K-12 programs with attendees. There were also breakout sessions addressing research and evaluation in K-12 STEM education, involvement in K-12 outreach programs, and implementation best practices for K-12 activities on campus.

This year, the Summit will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the press suites on the second floor of the Bill Moore Student Success Center. The Summit will consist of a program spotlight, lightning talks, and breakout sessions covering various topics related to K-12 outreach. Lunch will also be served.

This event is free and open to Georgia Tech faculty, staff, and students. Please register by clicking here.  For those interested in presenting a “Lightning Talk,” please indicate so on the registration form and then a separate email will be sent with further information.
