DM Talks F23: (De)colonial Difficulties in JRPGs: Collective Memory & (Post)colonialism in Atelier Ryza

Primary tabs

Join us welcoming Dr. Scheiding, the newest addition to the DM faculty! Dr. Scheiding will be introducing his work to the DM community on our second DM talk of the semester, Monday Sept 11th at 11 am in TSRB 118 (and virtual on Teams).

More about this talk:
"In this talk, Dr. Scheiding explores Koei Tecmo’s Atelier Ryza trilogy of games through the lens of collective/cultural memory theory, games as history, and postcolonial game studies as a way of examining how the games can be viewed as decolonial. He argues that this series of games offer anti-colonial narratives that question and openly critique colonialism, particularly historical colonialism, and the abuse of power. However, this gamic criticism of colonialism is, paradoxically, layered on top of colonialist game mechanics, systems, and modalities. Building on this, he examines how the Atelier Ryza trilogy of games offer a compelling vehicle for questions about what it means for a video game to be decolonial and how, as individuals, we can question the pasts, presents, and futures of colonialism."
