Seminar Title: A Day in the Life of an L3Harris Engineer

Abstract: At L3Harris, an engineer can have a wide variety of roles and responsibilities – from individual contributor to CEO! Join two team members from L3Harris Technologies, Amy Bonecutter-Leonard and Benjamin Barger, to hear about what a career at L3Harris could mean for you.

Biographical Sketch of the Speaker 1:

Amy Bonecutter-Leonard is the Engineering Director of Photonics & Microelectronics in the Space and Airborne Systems segment of L3Harris Technologies, which covers an extensive portfolio of solutions in intelligence, surveillance, small satellites, electronic warfare, avionics (including carriage and release systems), wireless solutions and C4I systems.

Amy assumed the position of Engineering Director of Photonics & Microelectronics in 2021. In this position, she reports directly to the Sr. Director of Electrical Engineering and is responsible for all engineering operations of the Photonics and Microelectronics departments, including staffing, e3 initiatives, process standardization, hiring, TLSP growth, and support of the Intel & Cyber sector.

Prior to her role as Engineering Director of Photonics & Microelectronics, Amy was the Engineering Manager for the Microelectronics Department. While providing electronic fabrication, assembly, and analysis services to the entirety of L3Harris, the department primarily supports the Intel & Cyber sector. Amy graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and is pursuing a Master of Science degree in Material Science Engineering from the University of Florida.  Amy joined L3Harris in 2016 from Lumense, Inc. where she was a Process Engineer in optical waveguide technology.

Biographical Sketch of Speaker 2:

Benjamin Barger is a member of the Electrical Engineering Digital Design team at the Military Displays division of L3Harris in Alpharetta, GA. Ben joined L3Harris Technologies in 2020 after obtaining his Masters of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech. He is responsible for many different Electrical Engineering roles, including circuit card design and debug, often having hands on two or three different projects/products at a time, in varying phases of the product development lifecycle.

Ben also spends time overseeing and maintaining equipment in the Alpharetta site’s maker space known as the Innovation Lab, where engineers can use the PCB prototyping and PCB fabrication equipment to rapidly prototype ideas for testing tools or design concepts.

While he was still a student, Ben participated in the Undergraduate Professional Communications Program as a graduate teacher assistant as well as the Interdisciplinary Design Commons as a “Hive” Master Peer Instructor. Since graduating, Ben has participated in many Georgia Tech career fair events as an L3Harris representative, and has worked with Dr. Weitnauer and her students on the ARTrium VIP project along with other L3Harris team members for two semesters. The skills developed from working with these organizations and assisting other students have directly helped his ability to quickly adapt to the L3H business needs. The technical and collaborative skills learned while a student allowed him to support both his own designs and helping other team members with their designs.
