Prior to joining Georgia State University, Long was a faculty member at Georgia Tech from 1991-2011 and an academic administrator from 1993-2011.

He received his Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University and his law degree from Georgetown University. He is the author of four books, including "Pandemics and Peace: Public Health Cooperation in Zones of Conflict," which was published this year, as well as "War and Reconciliation," "Economic Incentives and Bilateral Cooperation," and "U.S. Export Control Policy: Executive Autonomy Versus Congressional Reform." Long's fields of interest include health diplomacy and transnational governance, international cooperation and conflict resolution, international trade and technology transfer, and the international political economy. He has received multiple research and teaching awards from the United States Institute of Peace, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Hew, Pew, Sloan, and MacArthur Foundations, the Fulbright Commission, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Commission of the European Union. Long has served as principal investigator on several high-profile programs, including the Sam Nunn School's program on Science, Technology and International Security.
