Preventive Information Security

This class is intended for users who are interested in preventive security (proactive steps to take to help reduce the potential of an attack on information systems). The class is a core component of the Information Security Certificate program. During the session, we will cover what tools and services are available to the Georgia Tech IT community to help prevent many common types of attacks from reaching their critical systems.

The class will focus on the following areas and tools:

  • Firewalls - Host-based and Network-based 
  • Windows Patching - LanDesk, Windows Update, and Secunia PSI 
  •  Antivirus - McAfee ePO 
  •  Malware - Other opensource "free" alternatives 
  •  Whole Disk Encryption - PGP 
  •  System Hardening - Data Protection Safeguards 

The instructors will explain each area and demonstrate the various tools for the class as well as provide information on how to get started deploying the tools in the various campus units.

Objectives

At the end of the class, students will:  

  1. Have an understanding of the various patching tools and deployment options available to them.  
  2. Have an understanding of the campus antivirus tools and deployment options available to them. 
  3. Have an understanding of other anti-malware tools available.
