Conference Committee Negotiating Budget

Primary tabs

After passing the State Senate nearly two weeks ago, a final version of the FY2012 state budget is expected to emerge from conference committee just in time for approval by both chambers before Thursday’s adjournment. Conferees, 3 leaders from each chamber, have been working since last Monday to reconcile the handful of differences between the House and Senate versions.

Among the differences is a $150,000 allocation to the Georgia Tech Research Institute that was added by the Senate.  These funds would sponsor the Direct to Discovery program aimed at harnessing broadband technology to distribute STEM education content to rural K-12 schools in Georgia.

There were no other major changes affecting Georgia Tech’s priorities in the Senate version.  Both versions included bond funds for construction of the Eco-Commons and Major Repair and Rehabilitation which are expected to earn final approval.

After conferees agree on a consolidated bill, their report will go to the House and Senate for agreement.  Governor Deal will then have final approval on the budget that will take effect on July 1.
