Pacemakers of the South Asian and East African Monsoon Systems

The livelihood of over 3 billion people is influenced by the Asian and East African monsoon systems. Despite its societal importance, monsoon prediction remains a major challenge to date, and the future development of the monsoon systems in a changing global climate remains uncertain. In this talk, I compare and contrast the South Asian and East African monsoon systems, putting emphasis on the importance of internal processes forcing monsoon variability across a variety of timescales, noting some of the major gaps in our current understanding of monsoon systems. I conclude my presentation by highlighting opportunities for future research
