Join the Institute for Leadership and Social Impact for our first Impact talk of the season, a virtual panel with three outstanding alums, Maithili Appalwar (IE'18), Jasmine Burton (ID'14), and Lubna Rashid (ISYE'12), as they share about their careers in the social sector. The panelists will talk about what it takes to do work that matters and how a GT degree translates to social impact worldwide. The presentation will include a Q&A session at the end. Maithili Appalwar is a social entrepreneur based out of Mumbai. She leads Avana, an agri-business focused on providing affordable water conservation to farmers. Avana registered over $15Mn in revenues last year and has been profitable since its inception. More importantly, Avana has served over 20,000 farmers, increasing their income by over 98.7%. Maithili studied Industrial Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated in December 2018. Her undergraduate research, rooted in Clinical Psychology and Sociology, was focused on asset-based models to improve mental health in low-resource resource communities in India. https://www.linkedin.com/in/maithili-appalwar/

Jasmine (Jaz) Burton is a 2014 GT Industrial Design graduate and current 1Y MBA student at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School. She is a social inclusion and design specialist focusing on gender equity, meaningful youth engagement, and innovation in the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and global health sectors. Following her team's wins at the 2014 GT Ideas to Serve and Inventure Prize Competition, she has led iterative toilet innovation pilots and research across Sub-Saharan Africa with a design thinking lens and in resettled refugee communities as the founder and CEO of Wish for WASH. Additionally, as the Founder and Principal of the Hybrid Hype, Jasmine has been an independent consultant for 10+ impact organizations worldwide. Lubna Rashid is a postdoctoral researcher at the Technical University of Berlin's Centre for Entrepreneurship, researching the intersection of entrepreneurship, digitalization, and sustainability, particularly in contexts of fragility and crisis. Lubna is primarily a quantitative researcher with academic backgrounds in genetics, health systems, and management of technology. She was born in Iraq and worked with several activist groups, consultancies, and social entrepreneurs across the USA, Europe, and the Arab world. She holds a Master’s in Health Systems from the H.
