Title:  Reflection of Modulated Radio: Design, Analysis and Characterization of Long-Range Ambient Scatter Communication Systems

Abstract: The objective of this proposed research is to design and manufacture a long-range, low-power Ambient Scatter Communications System (ASCS) , evaluate its RF performance within contentious electromagnetic environments, and illuminate the specific needs of these novel and emerging systems when compared to more traditional communication systems. Currently in its infancy, Ambient Scatter Communication is a novel paradigm for wireless connectivity which uses previously modulated radio transmissions as the RF carrier between a scattering node and a receiver, completely removing the need to synthesize RF signals. This proposal outlines the signalling and RF concerns unique to this method of wireless communications and presents preliminary published research on unique solution elements such as Perfect Pulse signalling, pre-quantization filtering for signal integrity, and application specific RF predictions. The anticipated benefits from these elements will result in a system that aim to realize the first ASCS's to operate with continuous coverage between the transmitter and receiver, surpassing the range limitations of current state-of-the-art systems.
