Breaking Into an Industry: How to Successfully Use Analytics in Hockey

Primary tabs

Traditionally, analytics have not been used by elite hockey teams. However, the recent success of analytics in other sports has encouraged hockey executives, managers and coaches to consider their benefits. Some teams have hired statisticians. A small number of analytics consulting firms have engaged with a limited number of teams. In general, most hockey teams do not use analytics as part of their decision making processes. To break this trend, The Sports Analytics Institute took an approach that focused on three key principals: infrastructure, education and results. In this talk, Kevin Mongeon of the Sports Analytics Institute will discuss why analytics have not previously been adopted into the mainstream, how their approach has been successful and how analytics can successfully be used in hockey.
