Abstract: The objective of the proposed research is to gain a better understanding of the physical properties behind one of the primary physical vulnerabilities of electronic devices, EM side channels. After investigating the sources of EM side-channel signals, this proposal uses these signals to improve the security of a device's hardware. To better understand the causes of EM side channels, two methods for locating the physical sources of the side channel are developed. Both methods are intended to simplify locating the side-channel signals in the frequency spectrum and relate them to the program activity causing the signal. The original method is designed to locate low-frequency sources of the side channel on a device. Afterwards, this method is updated to locate high-frequency sources of the side channel. Both methods are used to compare how the EM side-channel sources change with frequency and program activity. Afterwards, knowledge of the EM side channel and how it relates to the physical properties of a device is used to develop a method for identifying and authenticating components installed on a motherboard. Focusing on components already integrated on a motherboard makes it possible for designers to authenticate devices assembled by third parties. The method is evaluated by testing on components integrated on several types of devices. Finally, the concept of using the EM side channels for identification is expanded into a method for remotely identifying electronic devices. This method is intended to be resilient to interference from other devices present in the environment. Overall, this proposal provides designers with information for improving the security of their designs.
