Brittain Fellow Darcy Mullen to Speak at Disability Studies Initiative Event atEmory

Primary tabs

Third-year Brittain Fellow Dr. Darcy Mullen has been invited to give a lecture as part of Emory University's Disability Studies Initiative Monthly Scholar Showcase Series. She will be reading from her forthcoming book, Found Materials, followed by a discussion about her narrative process.

About the project, Mullen says, "In Found Materials, I chronicle my experiences through art and specifically the narrative conventions of comics from March 2018- March 2019. The drawings that form the foundation of this book began as an Instagram challenge for #EndometriosisAwarenessMonth. This project began in response to my own experiences with endometriosis and adenomyosis, and the marathon of surgeries that those diseases require. The title refers to both its design, as well as the subject-matter: how medical shorthand refers to endometriosis tissue as “found material.” It is a memoir about the limitations of communication, healthcare access, and healthcare as a human right with my story as its foundation. The visuals throughout use charcoal from a BBQ pit, and I use mauve ink that I made from my rose bushes (much of the art is available for public view, under the hashtags #EndoArMo and #HysterArMo)."

Mullen's lecture will take place in Emory's Calloway Center, C201, from 12-1 PM on February 19, 2020.
