Georgia Tech’s Global Engineering Immersion Program: Around the World in Three Semesters

Why study at just one Georgia Tech campus when you can study at all three? The Global Engineering Immersion Program (GEIP) capitalizes on Georgia Tech’s academic presence in Atlanta, Georgia USA, Metz, France, and Shenzhen, China. GEIP participants complete their master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering by studying with Georgia Tech on 3 different continents – North America, Europe, and Asia, earning a master's degree in as little as 12 months.

Two master’s students in Electrical and Computer Engineering received their diploma in Fall 2019 with the additional bonus of completing the Global Engineering Immersion Program. Loïc Mesdon completed a dual-degree with Georgia Tech and his home school in France – Supélec – just outside of Paris. His path took him first to Georgia Tech-Lorraine, then to Georgia Tech in Atlanta, with his final semester at Georgia Tech-Shenzhen. Patrick Weathers began his studies with a semester on the Shenzhen campus, followed by a semester on the Lorraine campus, finally donning a cap and gown in Atlanta where he completed the last semester of his master’s program. Students may complete the GEIP semesters in any order they like, with approval from the Shenzhen and Lorraine campuses.

Applying to Georgia Tech’s master’s program in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida, Patrick knew he hit the jackpot when he learned about the GEIP - not only could he discover the world and become a globally-trained engineer studying in China, France, and the U.S., it would end up costing less than if he had done his entire degree at the Atlanta campus!

After hopping on the plane to China, it wasn’t long before Patrick started sending us dispatches from Asia. He loved the experience of studying on the Shenzhen campus, raving about the professors and staff. It took no time at all before he knew where to find Shenzhen’s best street food and started to explore further afield. He visited Xiamen, Hong Kong, and Dapeng with fellow students, then used the Chinese New Year’s break to visit Cambodia and Thailand. Patrick was a seasoned Asia traveler by the time he got to Metz, France for a semester on the Lorraine campus. In addition to his studies, all of Europe awaited out the back door.

With a third and final semester at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Patrick’s world tour was complete - “What’s distinct about the GEIP is the ability to earn an increasingly competitive Georgia Tech degree from Tech professors while diving deep into what it means to be a global citizen and engineer.”

The Georgia Tech-Lorraine and Georgia Tech-Shenzhen teams are working together to get the word out to prospective students about this incredible opportunity with the goal of giving engineering students the world.
