Abstract:
The objective of the proposed research is to study and demonstrate radio-over-fiber (RoF) based access technologies to improve the system performance of fiber-wireless networks. The proposed resource-allocation schemes can support RoF-based wireless overlay over fixed access networks, as well as facilitating photonic-assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) generation and transmission that is essential for next-generation high-capacity radio access networks. Owing to the architecture convergence of wireless and fixed access networks, mmWave signals for wireless services and digital signals for fixed services and can be co-transmitted using the proposed schemes, bringing extra benefits from fiber resource re-use and optimization. To further enhance system performance, advanced waveforms and multiple access schemes are also investigated and experimentally demonstrated for mobile fronthaul systems with mmWave transmission, which improve the spectral efficiency, robustness against interference, decoding accuracy, and network flexibility of RoF-based fiber-wireless access networks.
