Brittain Fellow Darcy Mullen's Work Contributes to Award Nomination

Through her work with the Mayor’s Office with Resilience, Dr. Darcy Mullen is a critical part of the team nominated for a Civic Impact Award In Government Innovation In the City of Atlanta. This nomination recognizes 14 different organizations at a black tie gala on December 12th, 2019 (at the Masquerade) where they will announce the recipient of the award. This nomination is the result of using innovation in communication, community building, and development in Atlanta’s mission to increase food security for residents by 2.5%, by 2020.

Dr. Mullen’s community outreach, scholarship, and teaching are integral to her place in this nomination. In the form of service on policy working committees, and building on an already robust line of communication between Georgia Tech and the network of community partners in social and urban resilience, Dr. Mullen’s embedded participation in civic outreach has been intensive. This work is part of her monograph (in preparation) “There’s No Space Like Home: Locavore Writing and the Rhetoric of Place” (along with a number of public-facing essays, articles, and speaking engagements).

In her ENG 1102 SLS Linked Courses (and independent study teaching), Dr. Mullen’s students have developed a great deal of multimodal, public facing, work that has contributed to community food security: food policy proposals, a podcast series for food literacy, interactive, public facing, choose your own adventure in alternate food history computer games, an app to locate fresh food in “food desert” (food apartheid) areas, communication strategies and campaigns (social media, community, public writing, ads, short documentaries). Students have been working with feedback from the mayor’s office—and have been able to incorporate real world stakes in their first WCP experiences.

The nomination is particularly meaningful for Dr. Mullen, who is deeply invested in quantifiable outcomes of research methods and pedagogies that quantifiably decreases hunger, and increases social and structural resilience.
