Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Expo

Primary tabs

See the creativity of engineering seniors at Thursday's Capstone Design Expo -- the culmination of their work in the final undergraduate Capstone course at Georgia Tech. Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Industrial Design student teams will display 40 projects at this free event, which is open to the public.

In the Capstone course, undergraduate student teams systematically design, build and report solutions to a variety of problems from industrial sponsors or their own imagination.

Some of this year's exciting projects include:

  • The Voyager Vacuum – Development and demonstration of underwater bottom-cleaning equipment for large tanks in the Georgia Aquarium.
  •  Advertisement Blimp – Autonomous floating blimp for indoor store or mall advertising, capable of following a flight path.
  •  Rice Husk Gasification Stove - Improving the design of a rice husk gasification stove for use in Nicaragua.
  • Paper-to-Plastic Recycling - A scaled down process development demonstration for separating paper from plastic for recycling.
  • Global Soap Project - Design of a volunteer-operated factory to recycle soap from U.S. hotels to distribute to refugees in Africa.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams. Judging is done by faculty and industry sponsors.
