Georgia Tech Hosts Global Climate Action Symposium

Primary tabs

Scientists, engineers, business and policy experts, artists, and student activists will gather at Georgia Tech Friday, Sept. 27, for the Global Climate Action Symposium, hosted by Georgia Tech and six European consulates.

The event coincides with European Climate Diplomacy Week and, fittingly, is the first major event to take place in Georgia Tech’s new Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design.

“The Global Climate Action Symposium celebrates the engagement of Georgia Tech and its vast network of global and regional partners in one of the defining challenges of our time,” said Kim Cobb, Georgia Power Chair and ADVANCE Professor in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Science and director of the Global Change Program.

The public symposium will feature panel discussions with faculty and students from Georgia Tech and Emory University, as well as industry representatives and government delegates. The day is broken into three parts: science, technology, and policy; student engagement; and art and climate future.

“We especially encourage students to attend the symposium’s afternoon session featuring student climate leaders from Georgia Tech and beyond, and to use this as an opportunity to learn about all the amazing new opportunities to get involved in climate solutions, in and out of the classroom,” Cobb said. “As they experience The Kendeda Building for the first time, I hope they see how the boldest of dreams can come to life.”

The event is being organized by the Global Change Program, which was launched in 2018. A central component of the program’s mission is to build new partnerships across Georgia Tech, as well as between the Georgia Tech community and outside partners, both private and public. The program is spearheaded by Cobb, who serves as director, and President Emeritus G. Wayne Clough, who serves as senior advisor.

Friday’s event also comes on the heels of Georgia Tech’s participation in the University Global Compact’s 17 Rooms-U, hosted earlier this week in partnership with the United Nations in pursuit of its Sustainable Development Goals.
