Mecha Suits, Postracial Skins: “Becoming Japanese” in New American Science Fiction, lecture by Dr. Amanda Weiss

Primary tabs

Presentation on the Techno-Orientalist imaginings of Japan in contemporary American media productions. Through an analysis of the feature film Pacific Rim (2009) and the Netflix production Altered Carbon (2018), it will argue that new Hollywood productions often feature the disappearance of Western characters into Japanese mecha suits and bodies. These narratives suggest both a continuation of postwar Orientalist tropes and new discourses on race and ethnicity in American science fiction. This event is open to public.
