Dr. Chris Ippolito was invited to lecture on Francophonie at the University of Georgia (Africana Brown Bag Lecture, African Studies Institute) on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018. Dr. Ippolito’s lecture, “Francophonie and Neocolonialism in Africa,” discussed political and cultural aspects of Francophonie through various media (print, web, and television), and showed how French has been and continues to be used for neo-colonial purposes. It addressed situations in countries such as Rwanda, Cameroon, the Comoros and France itself, and pled for a new kind of decolonization in post-francophone cultures.

Dr. Christophe Ippolito (Chris) is an Associate Professor in the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, and an associate member of the French Research Center “Ecritures” (EA 3943). He specializes in post-1800 French literature and culture, and contemporary African cultures, and has published books on Flaubert and description, edited volumes on the Middle East, modern France, and more than 50 book chapters and articles. Selected as a Georgia Power Professor of Excellence representing the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts in 2016, he has recently published two edited volumes on literature and the notion of life, and autobiography today, and edited a journal issue on autobiography and society. A monograph on post-francophone identities is forthcoming. He is currently working on a monograph on literature and politics.
