Summer Snacking Done Right!

Primary tabs

Summer is starting to dwindle down, and more people are trying to enjoy the Vitamin C before the fall semester starts. Healthy, transportable snacks are a great way to keep your energy up and are much more cost-efficient then hitting those vending machines. It’s important to stay mindful of your eating habits while enjoying the summer sun. Sit back and enjoy your day at the beach or picnic at Piedmont Park with these easy to pack and carry summer snacks.

Stay Hydrated with Fruits and Vegetables

Washed, whole fruits are not only a source of fiber, as Health Initiatives Dietitian Amber Johnson explained, but also a great source of hydration. Water-heavy fruits, like watermelon and berries, and vegetables, such as cucumbers and celery, can act as substitutes for drinking water. To get the freshest fruits and vegetables and do less damage to your wallet, Health Initiatives dietitian, Leah Galante recommends consumers opt for in-season options like cherries, peaches, tomatoes, and strawberries.

Travel Friendly Whole Grains

Whole grains are also a good travel-friendly source of fiber and carbohydrates to keep your energy up throughout the summer. Trail mix, seeds, and crackers are healthy grain options for an easy grab and go summer snack that doesn’t require refrigeration. How do you know its whole grain? The most accurate way to be sure is by checking the ingredient list. If the first ingredient listed contains the word “whole” in it then the product is likely to be predominately whole grain.

Keep Your Refrigerated Foods Cold

Choosing healthier snack options can sometimes require refrigeration. When choosing snacks for a day outside Amber always recommends bringing a cooler and eating those snacks first. If lugging around a cooler doesn’t appeal to you, you can freeze a water bottle and use it in a lunch box to keep your items cold throughout the day. Low-fat cheese sticks, overnight oats, or Greek yogurt are great and filling snacks to keep your hunger at bay.

Whether you’re heading to the beach or spending the weekend at a music festival, these smart, travel-friendly food choices will keep you energized and full all day long! For additional information on nutrition at Georgia Tech, go to healthinitiatives.gatech.edu/nutrition.
